Orkut vs Facebook in Indian Organisations

Not Convinced - Hugh MacLeodI was at a meeting today, and I learnt that Orkut is banned by the organization, but not Facebook and LinkedIn.  I was told this is true in many organizations in India.  The perception is that Orkut is frivolous  and people spend lots of time playing.  The funny thing is,  I have never spent as much time on Orkut as I do on LinkedIn and more so, Facebook.  There’s just so much more to do at Facebook than responding to scraps, and sometimes just looking around and replying takes up an hour or two.  The guys banning these social networking sites in companies are way behind, as usual!

Thanks for posting the cartoon :)

I don’t know Orkut well, but I find Facebook totally unaddictive.

    Rock on,

    Hugh

Thanks for dropping by Hugh. I’m a big fan - your cartoons make me ‘feel’ and think! For many in India, Orkut and Facebook are really the only imprints tons of folk have on the web - hence addictive. Orkut is huge in India, and recently, there’s been a shift to Facebook. I find there’s simply lots more to do at Facebook and hence my comment.

Thats true. even my org has blocked orkut while facebook is still open.
And speaking of Indians hooked to orkut, I believe Orkut was the first social networking site we got to explore .. when orkut was getting popular in India by arnd 2002 , Myspace was already the leader with maximum ppl in US loggd in..
We were never totally into the concept of ‘peeking’ into others profile to see what they are upto and the youngsters(inc me :)) picked it up very fast..
