  • Using Mobile Phones To Broadcast News – Gaon ki Awaaz (voice of the village) & another among tribals [via @timepass] – This is an interesting service in the area of participatory media and distributed news networks. Taps into the cuture of story-telling among villagers and tribals in India (in fact all over India!). CLIP: "Gaon Ki Awaaz (Voice of the Village) is a rural news bulletin in India which uses a mobile phone as the broadcast medium. The news is generated by the villagers and broadcasted in their local dialect by native journalists, something which was previously not possible because of widespread illiteracy, rendering newspapers and SMS alerts ineffective. Since cell phones and voice calls are cheap here, it makes the project viable. A similar project is operating down south in a remote tribe, which focuses on hyperlocal news reported by local citizen journalists. These projects show the value of cell phones for distributing news which is highly relevant to the locals and broadcasted in a language easily understood by them."
