3 random gems from my wise maid this morning.:

Gem 1: We were discussing an imminent death in one of the TV soaps. She says:  “People die only when they get a better role & more money. Wish that happened in real life”!  Karma redefined?

Gem 2: [[Warning: this is a graphic one engaging all your senses!]]. She burps really loudly.  Full throated. I say: Try keeping your mouth closed?  She says: “You don’t understand – if you burp with your mouth open and let it out with a large sound, it lightens your stomach and is worth it.  Otherwise why burp?”

Aside: As a child, I remember my Hindi tuition teacher who would burp right after drinking tea my mum served him.  Burping loudly each time.  I once asked him why he did that and he said it is to say “thank you”. Indian culture!

Gem 3: She is making me a nice spicy paste for fish.  We’re chattering away.  She asks me when my “gori” friend (“white” friend) is coming to stay again.  Comments that my “gori” friend would find the masalas too spicy. And then comes up with this gem:  “You know didi, they are so white because they eat so much butter and cheese and not enough spice”

My maid….she keeps me real. And is my number one in-home, real-time, living ethnography project!

Actually, my super lazy blogpost post TEDIndia. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and the best part was meeting such a great group of people. I feel incredibly fortunate, and humbled to have been a TEDIndia Fellow.

So I’m booking flights to Mumbai. I’m going to go get a beer at the Leopold, stroll over to the Taj for samosas at the Sea Lounge, and watch a Bollywood movie at the Metro. Stimulus doesn’t have to be just economic.

We’re doing just that. Mumbai Twitter users are meeting at Leopold Cafe for beer tomorrow at 4 pm. Come join us. Bring a candle and a hug. If you’re not in Mumbai, you can do the same in your city too!

Thank you to our armed forces, police force, firefighters. Many have lost their lives in the last 50 hours protecting us during and after the terror attacks. Many are still fighting for us, even as I write this post.

We can show our gratitude and respect for all they’ve done since the night of 26th November.

It’s festival time here and I am baulking at how much people spend on celebrations, rituals and the accompanying firecrackers that are driving me crazy. It makes me so furious sometimes that people who have to work so hard and live a hand-to-mouth existence, just blow up their money like this.

Then I remembered this incident a couple of years ago – I remember really shouting at this lady who helps clean my house (yes we do have help to clean and cook here in India), who wanted to borrow money to conduct a series of religious rituals in her hut during one of the festivals and call all the neighbours etc.  I began explaining all the logical reasons for using the money in more ‘productive’ ways. I tried explaining to her the difference between religiousity and religious rituals – and although I am not a believer, I do respect her right to believe, but not throw away money on wasteful (in my perception) rituals.  She wouldn’t listen and I was losing my temper with her and was at the point of refusing to give her the money.

Then she just broke down and said to me simply:

“Didi (big sister) – all I have is my faith, it keeps me alive – don’t take that away from me”

I was am so humbled. This is soul stuff!

My best friends – a couple I’ve known since my childhood days – are going through probably one of the most turbulent phases in their lives right now.  Yesterday I found myself in separate conversations with them, both almost negotiating around the tugs of guilt and blame; love, failure and loneliness; remorse about the past and fragile  around an uncertain future. Emotionally drained with symptoms of really low self-esteem.

Just believe. No one and nothing can change that face in the mirror without your permission.
