Dina, thanks so much for having shared this.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting such an easy fix from the first result on the page.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comment, Sanjukta. I just don't believe that censorship is the answer. This medium will always find a way around - the digital/info activism movement attempts to do that. What I do believe in is respect for each other's views and I'm afraid that the easy amplification and 'freedom' the internet brings, often makes us forget to do so. And often those that have the authority to censor don't really understand this medium at all, which is what happened when the government attempted to ban some blogs and inadvertently banned all blogspot blogs. Now its Blackberry, then Skype, Google ... where will it end??

We definitely do not want censorship. The thought of being like China and so many other countries where freedom of speech is stifled, is terrifying.

These rants are usually always anonymous. They simply can't take ownership of their opinions, too embarrassed?

Nice article Dina. I wrote it long time back about these internet censorship and was glad to see you mentioned the point that always baffles me, if we don't like censorship, how come we moderate comments on our blogs or discussions forums or email groups? As much as I love freedom I think we cannot do away with censorship in totality. It is a necessary evil.

The more we (internet or new media) are treated as serious media and more the line between mainstream and new media is blurred the more we will need internet censorship. Because it is no longer possible to ignore this medium. It is gaining more powers, with power comes responsibility and you know the rest of the drill.

Hi Anonymous,

I was tempted not to publish your comment, not because it contains 'alternative thoughts' as you say, but because you prefer to hide your true identity. I prefer having conversations with people who aren't anonymous and freely air their views without fear.

On your comments - let me just say that a lot of what you have commented on (poverty being equated to rural and the whole issue about hinduism and sati), aren't my words or thoughts. They are quotes from articles published - check the attributions please. I would urge you to leave these comments on the original writings if your perception of what they have written compels you to.

Another typical article from group of urbanites.. so much said about rural poverty, that you people never find out why poverty and rural are clubbed together..

From when did rural equated to poverty & backwardness? and by whom? I bet, you people never know answers to these questions.. Yet you speak of so much and instead of a constructive one, you just deject yourself at the sad state and then instead of finding our root cause, get satisfied at self-flagellation, that we are all like this..

This is not the sign of a progressive india.. this is a sign of desperate india..

I also agree with the statement that "NOT all beliefs are equal".. but why single out only wife burning? WHy cant we take the belief, that "Only Jesus is the true god and all others are false".. or why cant we talk about the belief, that the whole world is divided in to believers-nonbelievers and that non-believers are either to be converted or killed..

Hinduism is NOT a religion.. and sati is NOT a belief.. incidently, you dont know the difference b/w customs/traditions and beliefs.. because sati is a custom, it was easily left out by our people of non-abrahamic cultures (ie hindus).. also, sati perse is a voluntary one decided by the concerned women.. this is recorded by british travellers themselves.. If you want i can give you proof..
But here you people believe in to the british propoganda that women are burned.. Its false.. women chose sati themselves, out of their love for their dead husband.. its a value system, where women who chose sati is elevated to god and worshipped..

The only thing i wish in this so called independance day is that india needs freedom more from these moral authoratarians like you people..

PS: I think this comment will not be published.. If otherwise, i thank you for allowing free speech and alternative thoughts..
